I've never understood the "boxing" of a planting area except for aesthetics when it's right up to the house or for a walkway. I kill all creeping weeds way before they get a foothold to invade.

i only had two reasons ..... organization and walkways...... i actually had more room than i needed, would never have been able to handle the entire area, which i had originally planned on doing ..... boxes allowed me to gracefully downsize.

...... asparagus all in ..... FIVE main rows in 3 separate beds..... from what i have read, i can plant tomatoes next to asparagus ..... plan on putting them down the centre of the 2 main asparagus beds and a row beside the asparagus in the smaller bed.... apparently tomatoes secrete solanine, which asparagus LOVES ..... next year i will plant lettuce under the asparagus in the heat of the summer...... the fully grown asparagus ferns will provide the lettuce with shade.

i wish i knew him, i wonder if i am like him, i wonder if i will ever know

RE: building the new garden .... on a budget ....
thanks, GG. I'm sure it will be a big success.

Have you even thought about having a patch of dandelion greens? They are one of most nutrition dense items you can eat. I gathered some a couple of weeks ago and juiced them. It doesn't taste that great...but great nutrition...and I read, recently that they are less bitter if you harvest them before they flower.

One thing about them....they reseed themselves. The roots are very nutritious also.
