I don't get it.
They didn't search the "flooded compartments" first?
They waited until the ship was towed back to Nippon?
They could have been alive in an air pocket.
This is starting to stink like a Clinton.

Not good to dive into a sinking ship. More could die that way with "all hands on deck."

Don't they have to close off flooded areas so the ship won't sink? There were sleeping areas that were crushed and underwater.

Photos I see don't show damage below waterline.
That's what pumps are for.
Check for life, then seal off.
Not adding up.

Photographs showed the side of the Fitzgerald caved in about a third of the way back. The Navy said the collision inflicted significant damage to the destroyer above and below the water line, flooding berths, a machinery area and the radio room. The Crystal, at 730 feet in length, is more than 200 feet longer than the Fitzgerald and, with its load of shipping containers, would weigh several times as much.

You can't see below the water line in the photos.
If you notice there is water pumping out the side in the photo and its in the area where the damage is.
We can assume the bilge pumps are pumping water from compartments below the visible damage.
If you examine the photos of the ACX Crystal there is at least one shot where you can see the bulbous bow the protrusion on the front under the water line that would have caused damage on the Fitzgerald under the water line.
In ancient times the structure of the bulbous bow was a reinforced section designed for causing ramming damage under the water line.
The modern structure exists on non combat vessels to reduce resistance by breaking waves, but it obviously still can cause significant damage when used as a ram either intentionally or not.

Interestingly for a conspiracy twist JFKs middle name was Fitzgerald and the story of his ship PT109 is a conspiracy theory in itself..
A fast tiny little torpedo boat broadsided by a Japanese destroyer and sank of course in the pacific neither ship fired on each other though it was during WWII and has been written off as an accident.

Yes I now see how the damage could be blow the waterline.
I just hope it was quick for the ones who didn't make it.
I'm familiar with JFK's PT 109.
After the 109 sank, JFK was given PT 59. PT 59 is the boat that rescued the Marines from an island full of Japanese.
The remains of PT 59 are said to be docked in a canal in NYC of all places.

That's not how it works, any water on the ship will compromise the ship and all lives on board. Any compartments that are damaged and leaking badly are immediately sealed off, they teach damage control and not to stay in a leaking or flooding compartment because you will be sealed in. Now I know they weren't joking when they told me that in boot camp.

It took Trump 18 hours to comment -- by tweet.

No Navy Secretary, no Ambassador to Japan.

Where is the line?

Why am I even asking? There is no line. Trump was right. He could shoot someone on 5th Ave in cold blood and his cultists would find a way to blame Hillary for it.
