Los Angeles Vision Zero = No more cars, no more driver's license

Mayor Eric Garcetti's plan for the future is to take away your driver's license in Los Angeles Vision Zero 2015-2025:

Mayor Garcetti Signs "Vision Zero" Executive Directive to End Traffic Deaths in LA
Mayor Eric Garcetti launched a bold initiative today calling for city departments to pursue a goal of eliminating traffic-related deaths by 2025.

The program, called “Vision Zero,” is based on the fundamental principle that traffic deaths can be avoided through strategic, data-driven approaches to engineering, enforcement, education, evaluation, and community engagement. Adoption of the Vision Zero policy is a key facet of the Livable Neighborhoods focus of Mayor Garcetti’s Sustainable City pLAn.

What is Vision Zero Los Angeles?
We should be able to move freely and feel safe on our streets. That is what Vision Zero is all about.

Every year, more than 200 people are killed while trying to move throughout our city. Nearly half the people killed on our streets are those who were walking or bicycling, and an alarming number of them are children and older adults. In fact, traffic collisions are a leading cause of death for children in Los Angeles.

Vision Zero Los Angeles is our city’s commitment to eliminate all traffic deaths by 2025. As directed by Mayor Garcetti, this citywide effort brings together transportation engineers, police officers, advocates, and policymakers to work together towards creating safer streets. Our focus will be protecting our most vulnerable road users, including children, older adults, and people walking and bicycling.

Commuters not buying what Bonin and mayor are peddling - and pedaling: Doug McIntyre
But Mike Bonin has been peddling something that’s got constituents of the mild-mannered councilman famous for his blue shirts seeing red. Gridlock. Deliberate gridlock.

Bonin signed off on the elimination of 9.4 miles of traffic lanes along Venice Boulevard and the construction of 4.3 miles of dedicated bike lanes creating a new bottleneck further choking L.A.’s already choked roads. Bonin is now the focus of a potential lawsuit and growing on-line petition drive demanding his recall from office.

Mess with traffic and you mess with the DNA of Los Angeles.

Bonin has embraced Mayor Garcetti’s utopian “Vision Zero” plan, purportedly to eliminate all traffic deaths in L.A. by 2025. At least that’s how it’s being spun. The real purpose is the elimination of the private automobile as a viable means of transportation in Los Angeles.

2030 May Be The Year They’ll Take Your Driver’s License Away
I was stuck in traffic yesterday, which I didn’t really mind because I have a fun little yellow convertible, and I was thinking about Uber ($17 billion! - that’s the company’s valuation, not the price of a ride) and Google’s driverless cars (development cost unknown), and I decided it was time to connect the dots: once a car learns to drive, there’s no need to own it and there’s no need for a driver. That’s because the car can come when called, take you to your destination, then go off and pick up someone else.

That sounds great and I’m hardly the first to connect those particular dots, but there’s a corollary that seems to have gone largely (though not entirely) unnoticed: when driving oneself becomes unnecessary, it will eventually become more expensive, less convenient and - ultimately - unlawful, because the cars will do it a lot better than we can. Traditional cars will find themselves in a death spiral, and they’ll be gone in less than - well, not less than 60 seconds, but sooner than you think.

What do you do if you have to pick up a load of cow sh*t for your garden?

You shouldn't judge a man until you walk a mile in his shoes...then you can say anything you want, because you're a mile away and you have his shoes.
