Camille is probably the most intense, but she broke the instruments. An anemometer at a USAF base recorded her wind at 200 mph before breaking.

The most powerful Atlantic storm in the historic record was the Great Hurricane of 1780, which stripped bark off of trees, destroyed all structures in its path and killed some 22,000 people. Its winds must have exceeded 200 mph, at least in gusts.

WELL HERE IS THE FACTS

HERE IS THE FACTS?

Hey, dummy.

The word "FACTS" is plural.

Get it?

PLURAL.

We can say HERE IS AN IDIOT but we cannot say HERE IS THE FACTS.

It is important that language be correct.

Why?

Because when language isn't correct things can go wrong.

Sometimes they can go so badly wrong that people end up dead.

OK?

RE: HURRICANE IRMA
Good questions, as always, GL. Maybe you could ask the citizens of Rockport and POrt Aransas, TX. Or maybe poll a few displaced Houstonians? Or perhaps you have some contacts in the Caribbean? I hear there are some emerging hurricane experts in Barbuda and St. Martens. I'm sure they'd all love to participate as you hold court, and set us all right on the finer points of meteorology and the history of climate.

Perhaps you'd like a free weekend trip to South Beach. I hear there are plenty of LOPers willing to pitch in to defray the costs. Oddly enough, they're all from SE Texas and Florida ... I wonder what that clustering means, statistically speaking?

RE: HURRICANE IRMA
I remember watching Katrina three days before it hit and saying out loud "that is going to put New Orleans under water". There were PBS specials and engineering peeps saying the same thing years before the hurricane. If a hurricane like that hit just right, well, New Orleans is 'gone'. Duh.

Looks like Miami is 'Gone'. It is a slow motion disaster waiting to happen.

huh.

And Houston, they should have been prepared for five feet of water to hit them all at once, look where they are living. Some planning and common sense could have helped. Oops.

RE: HURRICANE IRMA
Well, since we're talking facts: If Irma exceeds 72 hours as a category 5, it will go down as the longest sustained category 5 hurricane in recorded history — in the Atlantic basin.

But to the larger point, you always leave the impression that should the upper deck of a baseball stadium collapse you would be on this forum picking fights over which major league player holds the single-season home run record. Maris, of course, is the the correct answer.

Fact? Debatable. But the correct answer nonetheless.

For those who are truly curious, here's an article as to why Irma is being called a 'record-breaking' storm:wired.com

And remember, kiddos: Maris is the correct answer, even if the facts might suggest otherwise:

2. Mark McGwire (34) 70 1998 R HR Log

DETAILED GRAMMAR NAZI

QUOTE

Is vs. Are with Mass Nouns

Mass nouns (also called noncount nouns) are similar to collective nouns. They refer to things that can’t really be counted. Sand and water are mass nouns. Mass nouns take is in both American and British English.

"Irma shattered the global record for a cyclone to maintain 185-mph winds for such a long duration, 33 hours.
Super Typhoon Haiyan previously set the record in 2013 when it maintained winds at that level for 24 hours."

Why are you bringing facts into this discussion?
GL is conflating the hurricane with global warming and will never accept any fact that is counter to his perspective.

GL is very fragile, emotionally. chuckle

RE: HURRICANE IRMA
ACTUALLY WARMER CREATES LESS HURRICANES, LESS TEMPERATURE GRADIENT FROM THE TROPICS.

STORMS ARE MEASURED BY WIND SPEED AND BAROMETRIC PRESSURE.

THE RECORD LISTS THEM

IRMA IS NOT TOP BY A LONG WAY

COMPARE LIKE WITH LIKE.

MAKING UP REFERENCE AND DATA POINTS IS DELUSIONAL.

NOTICE HOW BBC SAYS "FLATTENED" BUT THE PICTURES THEY POST SHOW INTACT BUILDINGS AND HILLS, CERTAINLY NOT FLATTENED.
