HURRICANE STORY INSIDE  Wrote: (09-11-2017 12:20 AM)
He said the Marines arrived.

Martial Law.

Curfew.

People are only allowed out
of their homes (or wherever
they are stuck), for FIVE
hours - between 1:00 p.m.
and 6:00 p.m.

He said that during those hours
the (non-flooded) streets are
filled with people begging for
food.

He is the manager of a bar. They were holding up there,
because the place had plenty of food and liquor and
back-up generators.

Things were going okay until he and the 8 others realized
that the place was beginning to flood. They took as much
food and alcohol and fuel as they could load, and fled to
higher ground.

The bar eventually flooded with water over four feet high.

He said that as the storm hit, they were eating what
they considered might be their last meal. So they
cooked up some big steaks and shrimp, had a feast
and got schnockered on Grey Goose.

But that was days ago...and the initial fear of the
storm has subsided, but panic was setting in as
Marines showed up with guns but no food or water.

He said that tension and fear is starting to prevail
in their small group. A huge fight erupted between
those who want to eat normally, and those who
want to conserve and ration food and water.

They are down to a couple dozen cases of water,
but if they have to, they will manually pump the
rain water from the cistern.

He said he wished he had a gun, because hordes
of people are out hunting for food and fuel during
the curfew.

But this is in the residential areas that are not yet
occupied by Marines. As of last night, still no
emergency supplies had arrived.

Initially, they were afraid to use the generator
at night because the sound will reveal their
location, and the fact that they have electricity
and must therefore have fuel.

He said that they are already very low on fuel
for their generator, which they only turn on
during the day to charge the array of batteries
and their cell phones, etc.

He said they turn it on sparingly during daylight
hours, but not between 1 and 6 p.m., as people
are allowed to be walking around, and might try
to come find them.

He also said they only turn on their generator when
they hear other generators running. Apparently others
also realized to not turn on their generators during the
hours people are allowed on the streets.

He said that a lot of people have back-up
generators, but that most are out of fuel.

He said that most of the looters, are sneaking around
at night and avoiding the Marine occupied areas.

But the looters aren't out stealing TVs and crap.

These people are rummaging for food, water, and fuel.

He said last night, that today they were going
to go back to the bar and siphon fuel that is
stored there for the bar's generators.

And that will only be possible if enough water
has receded. He said he is pretty damned sure
that if they get caught, that they will be arrested.

Our mutual friend had been previously struck with
a brain aneurysm and had already been hospitalized.

He was air-lifted off the island prior to the storm,
and is on his way to a hospital in Kansas.

But as for the island, etc....

He said the island has pretty much been wiped out.

It will takes years to rebuild, but the locals are hopeful
that when reconstruction begins, that the crews will at
least, hopefully, bring some revenue.

If you believe in God, please say another prayer for
all of these people. It will be years before their lives
might return to some kind of normalcy.

I will report back to this thread after I talk to him tonight.

law low and stay out of trouble. see this thing out

Thank you. And thank you to those with kind words,
all of which I will pass along to him. I am texting with
him right now. Others in his group are sleeping...

He says that looting has begun. Armed home invasions.

They got their fuel and did not get caught, but had to
avoid being followed back...they were being eyed as
potential victims.

He said they are receiving information from local radio,
but there is still no word on when any supplies will arrive.

Tension in the group has greatly escalated in the last 24 hours.

Arguments over liquor, food, and especially cigarettes.

He just told me it is like a REAL reality show.

He called it SURVIVOR HOUSE. "A live Social Experiment...Haha."

He said, "yeah, people are freaking about food, water, fuel, and
contraband, but the main thing people are trying to figure
out is HOW they can RENEW their phone subscriptions,
so that they can stay in touch with loved ones".

Man...that really sad.

I will be back sometime later with another update.

HURRICANE STORY INSIDE  Wrote: (09-12-2017 02:48 AM)
Just received an update from St. Thomas, but before
discussing what is going down on the island, I must
admit that I am speechless and dismayed at the
scumbags TROLLING a DISASTER THREAD.

smh...

What kind of sub-human filth refuses to put their
personal and theological opinions aside in the face
of tragedy and loss of life?

If a mod is reading, please consider banning #397275 for
trolling a natural disaster thread. It is beyond shameful
and is a disgrace to the forum

With that said...

I just got off the phone with my friend's son.

He is 18. His girlfriend is 19. They are in good spirits,
but are making plans to evacuate by Friday. As fate
would have it, of the people they are hunkered down
with, one of them happens to know an NBC reporter
who is currently reporting from the island.

The NBC guy has a chartered boat, and my friend
has arranged for his son and the girlfriend to ride
along (back) to Puerto Rico where the airport was
not badly damaged. Commercial flights are already
available.

The St. Thomas airport was destroyed and the only
flights coming in are military transports. That is the
good news.

Fuel and ice are now available at inflated prices.

He said that his dad waited in line for three hours to get ice.

As I previously said, when they evacuated from the
downtown bar, they took as much food, water, liquor,
and cigarettes as possible.

They have resorted to bartering with some of the steaks,
because they don't have enough ice to keep it all from
going bad. He said this has worked out though, because
their bartering with the neighbors has made them a bit
more safe, as the neighbors have fuel and more importantly,
they have GUNS.

They bartered steaks and hamburger for fuel.

They are hunkered down on the Northwest side of
Crown Mountain, at an elevation of about 700 feet.

He said the local police are preventing people from
going up the mountain unless they can prove they
live up there, but that these police abandon their
post when it gets dark.

Looting, armed home invasions, gunfire, murder
is rampant. Oh, check this out...

I initially reported something incorrectly. It was
the Coast Guard who initially showed up and took
to the streets, not the Marines.

The Marines did show up, but have not come ashore.

The son told me that he used a telescope to see the
vessel, which he estimated to be 20 miles out to sea.

He said it is the U.S.S. WASP. He is quite puzzled as
to why they have not come ashore, as armed robberies
are now happening hourly.

He said the scary part, is that the first place looted
was the Customs Office. So now the assailants and
looters are armed with M-16's and are sporting
full body armor.

He said he has focused the telescope downtown,
and can literally watch people being robbed. The
looters/robbers are focusing on people in line for
gas or ice.

They are being robbed of everything from their
money to their entire vehicle and everything in it.

Gunshots heard throughout last night and are increasing
in number as each night passes. He is concerned about
his girl being raped. She is so freaked out, that she will
not come out of the house.

Tension between their group has subsided, as they,
(the one's arguing about rationing food), seem to
be waking up to the reality that help is still a long
way off. So that is good.

He also told me that unbeknownst to everyone (and
even his dad), one of the first things he grabbed was
37 cartons of cigarettes. That was all he could fit in
his backpack. He had forgotten he even had them.

So when another fight over the cigarettes erupted,
he suddenly remembered the cartoons he packed
as they were fleeing. He immediately broke them
out and everyone was thankful and well relieved.

He estimates that if they can keep their fresh food fresh,
they will have enough food for about two and a half weeks.

I must tell you, I have known this kid since he was born.

He has a good head on is shoulders, is very responsible,
and is exceptionally clear minded about their situation.

I am so damned proud of him.

Tissue

Sorry guys. That is the second time I have used that emoji.

If you asked me a week ago, I would have told you
that I could have never imagined using that emoji
in this forum for any reason.

And although I can hear that Dad/son are clear minded
and are trying to stay strong and hang in there...

Every day I can hear an increasing level
of despair and fear in their voices.

There is more to tell, but please give me a few minutes.

smh

Part-4
HURRICANE STORY INSIDE  Wrote: (09-12-2017 05:18 AM)
Okay, I am back.

I wanted to thank Hrd, Arch, Slow, ISH, Uppity, Elizabeth,
and all others with kind words and prayers for all of the
people affected by this.

Elizabeth asked if the others are leaving with the NBC reporter.

To my knowledge (and surprise), no. The 6 others have lived there
their whole lives. My friend doesn't want to leave because he has
nothing to come back to in the States. He told me that if he can
"tough out" the next month or so, he is confident that things will
turn around. He wants to be part of rebuilding...

But he also said that it depends on if the violence
and looting finds it's way up to their location.

His son is frustrated that Dad doesn't want to leave,
even if it is for 1 to.3 months. They both have very
realistic expectations as to how long it will be until
electricity is restored - minimum 6 months.

The entire hospital is destroyed, and all patients were
taken to Puerto Rico by Navy ships or air-lifted by
Apache (?) helicopters prior to landfall.

There is no information regarding if locals/natives will
be offered transport off of the island. My friend told
me that there is a "tourist" part if the island, and a
"poor/ghetto" part.

He said that these people are so used to living in
abject poverty, that...in a way, the hurricane has
changed little for them, except now their shanty
has no roof (and a very real scarcity of food).

Prior to the storm, he had told me about the gangs there.

He said that they are JUST as armed and dangerous as gangs
in the States, but that they pretty much stay in their areas.

He told me the one thing different about them (from gangs
in the States), is that the local authorities tolerate NO STRAY
BULLETS harming other civilians, and especially the tourists.

So they are basically allowed to exist, so long as they
keep the violence in their areas and to themselves.

He told me that these guys would "never pull a chickenshit
drive-by shooting." If they want a rival gang member dead,
they literally shoot them from point blank range."

And this is something he is truly concerned about,
because these gang members are cold-blooded
killers, and if they run out of people to invade
and loot, they will eventually be finding their
way up the mountain.

The gangs, emboldened by their newly acquired M-16's
and body armor, have been hitting the safes of all the
tourist bars and restaurants.

Although (at this time) money can only buy fuel and ice,
the gangs are rumored to have made off with well over a
million dollars from the tourist bars, restaurants, resorts, etc.

"But they can't EAT money" he said.

The son told me that looking thru the telescope, there is
not a single building that is not damaged, "at least 20%.
But with most buildings, the walls are still there, but the
roofs are completely gone."

The poorest part of the island, (I think he said the Southeast
side), is completely leveled. "like Barbados...nothing left".

He told me that the island is only 3 miles wide
and 13 miles long, and the population is around
86,000 people.

Oh, and I shouldn't have said that the St. Thomas airport
was destroyed. The landing strips are in tact, but the
radio control tower was demolished, so no commercial
flights, only the military air-lifts are using the airport.

There is more to tell, but I have to go for now.

My friend volunteered for the "night watch", and I have
been keeping him company through these nights, and it
is just going on midnight on the island.

Oh, they added an extra hour to the curfew, so now
it is allowed to be on the streets from Noon to Six.

I thank you all for your prayers and will express your
symapathy to my friend and his group, and of course,
all the island's survivors of this historic event.

I will come back with more information tomorrow,
and sooner if something major takes place.

Events such as this puts a clear separation between the good and the bad. We hear about extraordinary kindnesses and heroic actions, but the other side of humanity is just as extreme on the negative side.

What a strange time we live in.

I recommend that people in the Virgin Islands, request that Richard Branson and his family leave it. Maybe then it will be offered God's protection.

They should be requesting FOOD from him. You just know he has a big stash; he could ration it out to many people as he is leaving.

Thanks, ISH, and by all means, yes, please share.

That is exactly why I wrote this thread, to give people
a first hand account of what it is like to be there in the
aftermath, dealing with the stress and the fear, the hope
and the strengths of humanity in a dire situation.

I will be back to update this thread again a bit later.

Something happened last night at a neighbors house,
just down the mountain. Emergency vehicles arrived
around 4 a.m.; and all I know right now, is that it
wasn't the neighbors that he traded steaks for
fuel with. There were gunshots heard, but he
was not sure if the events are connected.

I am waiting to hear back from him, he went to get
in line for more ice. But curfew ends in 15 minutes
from now, so I expect to hear from him shortly.

Back in a few, after I talk to him.

And today's pinned threads are...

FINALLY HEARD from my FRIEND in the VIRGIN ISLANDS.

--------------------------

Top thread, pinned for several days now... L.O.P. has had many members that have actually been through the recent hurricanes, and yet we have an Uncle Story / Friend thread pinned.

I am just amazed that someone would bother to write a thread
trying to insinuate that this is an "Uncle" thread, as everyone
here at LOP knows that this label implies a false story.

Sesamesnake seemed to overlook that all of the LOP hurricane
threads had NO information on the people who survived the
strongest, fastest, CATGOR-5 of recorded human history...

185 mph winds with 225 mph gusts...

On an island 3 miles (widest) by 13 miles long.

50 foot telephone poles uprooted from the ground,
suspended and hanging in mid-air.

Metal poles bent at 45 degrees.

Yet... Palm trees still have frons and coconuts?!?!

Go figure.

The difference is...

ALL...ALL of the LOP "hurricane" threads were about
people in America who endured a CATGOR-3 with
85 mph winds, which dwindled into a tropical storm.

This thread is telling the story of my friend, the BVI
{island} he lives on, and of those who survived the
worst storm in history.

Stick around if you are interested, because I will keep on
writing until these people in St Thomas at least have power.

This ain't no "Uncle" thread. If you want to see how
this turns out, I guess you can bookmark it or how
ever that works.

along (back) to Puerto Rico where the airport was
not badly damaged.

There is more to tell, but please give me a few minutes.

smh

Seems we've been uncle'd.

That sux.
