"Journalist, broadcaster, and bestselling author, Simon Winchester, tells the remarkable story of Joseph Needham [The Man Who Loved China], an eccentric English chemist who wrote a vast book on Chinese science [the multi-volume 'Science and Civilization in Chima'] which remains the longest book about China ever written in the English language. Winchester's lecture on The Man Who Loved China was delivered at the Royal Ontario Museum on October 14, 2010."

https://www.amazon.com/Genius-China-Scie...ph+Needham

The Genius of China: 3,000 Years of Science, Discovery, and Invention Revised ed. Edition by Robert Temple (Author), Joseph Needham (Foreword)

"Revised, full-color illustrated edition of the multi-award-winning, international bestseller that charts the unparalleled and astounding achievement of ancient China

• Brings to life one hundred Chinese “firsts” in the fields of agriculture, astronomy, engineering, mathematics, medicine, music, technology, and warfare

• Based on the definitive work of the world’s most famous Sinologist, Joseph Needham (1900-1995), author of Science and Civilisation in China

• Organized by field, invention, and discovery for ease of reference

Undisputed masters of invention and discovery for 3,000 years, the ancient Chinese were the first to discover the solar wind and the circulation of the blood and even to isolate sex hormones. From the suspension bridge and the seismograph to deep drilling for natural gas, the iron plough, and the parachute, ancient China’s contributions in the fields of engineering, medicine, technology, mathematics, science, transportation, warfare, and music helped inspire the European agricultural and industrial revolutions.

Since its original publication, The Genius of China has won five literary awards in America and been translated into 43 languages. Its Chinese edition, The Spirit of Chinese Invention, was approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education for use in connection with the national secondary curriculum in China. Based on the immense, authoritative scholarship of the late Joseph Needham, the world’s foremost scholar of Chinese science, and including a foreword by him, this revised full-color illustrated edition brings to life the spirit and excitement of the unparalleled achievements of ancient China."

Hey, 429552:

Do you get it that China did not invent this thing?

They may be brilliant. But reality is reality.

Why don't you start a Hug China thread?

My posts were intended as an antidote to the extreme arrogance of Americans which is abundantly evident in this thread.

Maybe the Chinese didn't invent "this thing" but they invented a hell of a lot of other things without which America and Americans wouldn't even exist. Ever hear of printing? gunpowder? the magnetic compass?

Apart from all this, how many 'American' scientists are not even Americans at all but are in fact Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, etc.?

Frankly, you people come over as a nation of ignorant braggarts. The Chinese, on the other hand, do not brag although they have a hell of a lot more to brag about, things that they did not steal from other nations such as Germany (Operation Paperclip) but that they came up with themselves.

Have a nice day!

And it wasn't just German weapons experts who were recruited, the whole of German science was looted (the knowledge of chemical dyes, for example).

I'm claiming something far more important.

I'm claiming that, as a nation, you know neither yourself nor your opponent and this is a very foolish position to be in.

According to Sun Tzu, those in such a position must inevitably lose. This is the best edition of his classic:

https://www.amazon.com/Art-War-B-Liddell...+-+sun+tzu

The Art of War Paperback – by Sun Tzu, Translated with an Introduction by Samuel B. Griffith.

"The Art of War is among the greatest classics of military literature ever written. Sun Tzu warfare is as applicable today as when the book was written some 2,500 years ago...." -- General A.M. Gray, Marine Corps Gazette.

This is silly.

Resonant cavities have been around for about as long as there were microwaves.

Shawyer is the first person to recognize they might be going somewhere.

If the optimum cavity shape doesn't match his they probably won't owe him royalties, since his cavity shape is dictated by his theory.

They probably can use his patent anyway since they aren't selling a competing product.

The US and England have by and large been ignoring it. The US is pushing the NASA VASIMIR drive.

You snooze you lose.

The important point is EMDrive is the only potential Interstellar drive. Any drive that uses intertial reaction mass is a non-starter.

Doesn't the EM drive use inertial reaction mass that is plasmatized?

No.

RE: China says they have made the EM DRIVE. Could get to Mars in Weeks
It's funny not more people have completely understood the implications to the EM drive, basically the 3 papers the describe how it works is as it is pushing against virtual particales...stuff that CREATES INERTIA.....and then EMITS a virtual photon.....

Just to be clear, if this was a "light drive" or a flash light hooked up to the back of the space shuttle, there would be no measurable thrust. But this thing has thrust with no matter how many way they try to explain it, they are pushing on the steering wheel of their car and it is moving forward....

Not only does this device have the ability to become much more efficient with YBCO superconductors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yttrium_ba...pper_oxide ) and LN2 but the driver circuit can also be increased in efficiency....

In fact, I'm sure they have already figured out the the larger the resonant cavity the lower the resonant frequency and the efficient increases exceptionally...

They have oscopes that are at 40 Ghz now a days and have MESFETs that are like MOSFETs but basically a much high frequency type....

But it doesn't stop there.....all those inertial drives on you tube? some actually might work....in fact, I sure that there are those who have already got positive results and have be squashed like bugs.....

All of this is not new the the govts.....they have known about these technologies for decades...TR3B is the US version....but little is known about it....

They even figured out a way to resolve the red shifting of the EM drive resonant cavity so that theoretically, they could go faster than the speed of light....

Now here's the question, why didn't they "hot tub" the inventor that brought it to the public eye....

Because they know the end is near anyways and they have their colony already setup, but the mass amount of people that are going will need a ship to get there and that requires public money.....just look at the new show "Salvation" geez....predictive programing there....anad btw that show is no where near the actual science of the EM drive...

Space travel.

Spectator sports.

No difference.

Both are distractions intended to keep your minds off of more important things.

Both are merely variants of the old Roman political trick of PANEM ET CIRCENSES (Bread and Circuses).

Give the masses bread and circuses (i.e., various kinds of entertainment) and they won't be concerned to look into and analyze and understand what the elite are up to.

Ever hear of 'hubris'? Heraclitus will clue you in on it.

So China never invents anything?

https://medium.com/threat-intel/quantum-...bf133cc63d

".... Quantum key distribution has been referred to as an ‘unhackable’ communication method. This method involves sending a shared encryption key embedded in quantum entangled particles of light. Because they are entangled, if one particle is intercepted by someone attempting to eavesdrop on the communication, the key will be altered in both particles, making it useless. Yet another weird and wonderful quirk of quantum mechanics.

China has made huge advancements in this field, and recently successfully sent quantum encoded data more than 1,200km via a satellite relay. To date, this is the longest distance over which quantum key distribution has been performed...." (continued at link).
