The Mendocino/Lake Complex fire approached to within 8 miles from where I sit right now, the wind direction saved my ass, turned the fire back on itself. That, and the huge response of water dropping aircraft stopped the advance of the fire coming at me.

The Atlas Fire is flaring up just outside American Canyon in Napa County. There have been some significant flames in the Skyline Wilderness Park area.

The good news is there aren't any homes in this area, but obviously firefighters want to get these flames out.

Napa is just across the highway, where an advisory evacuation has been issued for parts of the city.

I talked to a guy on the side of the road yesterday as we watched the burning hillside and he said "That's my house there we're looking at burning up..."

I would have asked him if he needed a hug.

After I posted that, that's exactly what I was thinking, I should of given him a hug instead of just saying "good luck" S977

Don't feel bad. Learn. Look forward and forgive yourself. No beating yourself up. Besides, some people would have taken it (a hug offer) wrong anyway.

Did you experience any hurricane strength winds?

PERFECT? Far from, but like my Lord and Savior, I am, a left-leaning-liberal. Amen

Not at all, the wind event happened just to the south of me. I was unaware of the high winds until I heard about it on the news. As the wind picked up yesterday, it was all blowing from the North and about 10 mph here, prob more at the top of the hills.

Winds Expected to Drive Next Wave of Deadly California Fires

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Gusting winds and dry air forecast for Thursday could drive the next wave of devastating wildfires that are already well on their way to becoming the deadliest and most destructive in California history.

Winds up to 45 mph (72 kph) were expected to pummel areas north of San Francisco where at least 23 people have died and at least 3,500 homes and businesses have been destroyed. The conditions could erase modest gains made by firefighters.

...

The 22 fires, many out of control, spanned more than 265 square miles (686 square kilometers) as the inferno entered its fourth day. Strategic attacks that have kept wildfire destruction and death tolls low in recent years haven't worked against the ferocity of the blazes.

"We are literally looking at explosive vegetation," Pimlott said.

"Make no mistake," he added later, "this is a serious, critical, catastrophic event."

...

"That's very bad," resident Nick Hinman said when a deputy warned him that the driving winds could shift the wildfires toward the town of Sonoma, where 11,000 people live. "It'll go up like a candle."

The ash rained down on e Sonoma Valley, covering windshields, as winds picked up. Countless emergency vehicles hurried toward the flames, sirens blaring, as evacuees sped away after jamming possessions into their cars and filling their gas tanks.

Officials voiced concern that the 22 separate blazes would merge into larger infernos.

RE: California fires: 23 dead, hundreds missing, 3,500 structures burned
I am in Mendocino County and I had to evacuate at 3 am Sunday night/Monday morning. It seems my house is all right and I have it pretty easy for an evacuee, but there is still no word on when I can go back home, and I'm not certain my house is out of danger yet.

I've never seen anything like this. Santa Rosa looks like parts of it were carpet bombed. Thousands of people have been displaced. I know several people who lost everything. It will take years to recover from this.

Unbelievable. Hundreds missing!!? How did they not have time to escape??

The fricking Santa Rosa HILTON burned to the ground. Where people stay when they visit the wine country.

So many wineries gone. Get ready for CHARRED-donay next year, sorry couldn't help it

Seriously. I am stunned at this.

Seriously, don't ever wish to be caught up in a wildfire. The confusion, the heat, the searing fire, the blanketing, choking smoke, the blocked roads, seldom is anyone ready to flee on a moments notice, and many people are unable to walk, drive or escape...and these fires are in areas of heavy development. Confusion and chaos reigns.

It is amazing that not MORE are dead or missing.

This does not appear to be just a freak thing or circumstance...these fires seem deliberate.

And, folks, just wait. After bad fires in California we often get heavy rain in the winter. The Coastal Range mountains are very soft and unstable down there...expect mudflows and more trouble.
