Lately, I've read a lot of articles about how things are changing in one are or other of American society and culture.

Grocery stores are going out of business left and right. The newer generations don't cook at home.
They order out.

DIY stores are in trouble because their customer base of people who fix things and upgrade their homes.
Younger generations aren't interested in owning their own home. They rent apartments and homes.
They can't even hammer a nail without instructions apparently or do more than change a lightbulb.

Millenials and I-gens aren't interested in cars or driving. It may be the real driving force in having self driving cars because they could see that their business models were going to suffer well into the future.
But, that is not the answer. These will probably just expect to rely on Uber or taxis to get them anywhere.

They have been the driving force behind the growth of Amazon and personal shopping stores like Shipt.
They don't want to shop, they want a box delivered to their door because well, they aren't driving, see the above.

Newer generations don't go to church as much.
They don't watch NFL football.
They don't watch network TV and News. And that's probably a good thing.

In short, the apple pie, football, cars, and America meme of who America thinks they are is changing.
The fundamental identity of being a prosperous and "good" people is diverging, as well.

We are not a melting pot. We are a double boiler that is distilling us into distinct haves and have nots.
We are becoming diverse on the one hand and completely hand-held two dimensional on the other.

How do you see the landscape of America as a country going forward? Suburban subdivisions sprouting up as far as the eye can see going away and going back to seedy overgrowth as these new gens seek life in gentrified inner city dwellings? Walkable cities and bikeable closeness being their chief requirements?

I prefer to stay at home cause when I was younger I had to run from pedophiles. They are out there, theres no denying it. And then when I got older I had to deal with drunks, drug addicts and people that befriended and then stole from me

In ancient Israel tribes were formed on family and relatives. Thats what I prefer sticking to now. just family. Parties are for family, outings are for family. WIth all the weird fetishes and political threats and divisions that strangers have, I have nothing to do with friends, neighbors or strangers anymore. Even Church didnt work, Church still didnt take out people who were jerks and would stab you in the back. It was just for formalities and social standing.

RE: America is Changing, Have You Noticed?
The questions should be directed to the scientists who are creating the
future society with their gizmos, their knowledge, and with THEIR motivations.

We could ask the Amish where their community is heading and get an honest
straightforward predictable answer.

Ask the engineers and technologists where society is heading and they will
shuck and jive, or duck and cover.

The scientists are considered the new prophets, however their prophecies aren't
very enlightening (when you spend the money to buy their books and take their
courses), they aren't very forthcoming; they seem altogether cold, unapproachable,
and remarkably indifferent to actual social consequences.

What am I concerned about? GM and Ford have announced they are coming out with a combined 33 new electric models. How come? Who would buy it? Obama signed a series of emission control bills which will pretty much force the country to switch over to electric cars.

Muscle cars will soon be owned only by the rich. How come? I'll bet anything they levy a tax on all gas engine cars in a few years.

Plan accordingly.............

RE: America is Changing, Have You Noticed?
I think the campaign of animosity toward the Millenial is coming from the corporations/establishment.

They buy local, shop pre-owned everything & stay away from big box stores.

A majority are vegans/vegetarians & prefer local farmers markets and food co-ops.

The establishment can't seem to pin them down with marriage, a brood of children & house/car payments.

They are not religious & believe in abortion so only the extreme losers will vote republican & they will end up in white supremacist groups.

Beyond a new cell phone every several years & student loans, they are pretty much free agents.

I think the question is, can they eventually be brainwashed into becoming boomers? So far, public shaming/blaming is not working.

Youre just speaking out from your little bubble. I live in a college town. They all want to go to school and make big money. And no they aren't idiots that don't know how to use birth control. Its usually inner city or lower educated women that get caught being pregnant so they resort to abortion. Smart women do know how to get on the pill or have the man use condoms.

Paleo, high protein diets are all the rage now. Many are waking up to the high carb diabetes inducing grains.

Of course they like to shop local.
They can't afford cars and wouldn't know how to drive one.

The supermarkets are closing because the kids don't cook.

The kids live together in apts or stay at home because they can't
afford homes. They put off raising kids because they haven't got the
sense of responsibility to care for a cat let alone children.

Yes, all the generations since the 50's has really be the i-generation and i-pod this and i-phone that are a terrific example. i-cars are now becoming uber and etc. soon to be driver-less vehicles. We are a generation of lost souls... Intent on self or i-gratifications... We are fastly becoming without skills, without common sense and without self-sustenance. Everything is reliance upon the god "i"....

all hail the i-gods!!!!!!!!!! doah.....

RE: America is Changing, Have You Noticed?
Yeah, but I don't think the millennials don't want to own a home, most can't afford them. Job turnover is high too, so roots are hard to lay down.

Also investors gobble up all the lower middle class homes. Hard to get into your first home.

Consumerism in general is down, in part because the boomers are getting old and they've got most of the loot that's left.

My major observation is people don't talk any more. They are stuck with their phones in their faces most of the time.

I still try to talk with people when I go out, customers or workers, sometimes even the homeless people around everywhere.

this is in so. cal. btw, I'm looking it as scary and almost a blessing at the same time... managers who are looking for a strong work ethic, are going to be less picky about older guys like me when we apply for a job. It just has not hit them yet, give it a few more years.

It's scary to the old way of doing things, as the younger generations are now reaching levels of influence and soon to be, government leadership.

The generation coming up in vast numbers, sees 40 hour workweeks, sh*t pay, low vacation, and constant debt as as futile and useless. This is true btw. Unless you have a valid refutation why we should all waste our entire lives, doing squat for progress as a whole for all of us.

Re-directing to the flow of experience, in this one life you are FOR SURE you have; is far more important than someone elses bottom line. They know it too.

The old way is a dying mechanism, and social evolution to reassert enjoyment of humanity over business and profit, is well under way.

I don't see the problem with this. At all.

a large percentage is not like you though, I was talking with an Albertson store manager about a month ago. He was complaining that many of the new kids being interviewed, had an unrealistic view of the world. high pay, lots of vacation time and flexible hours so the job could fit around their schedule.

I was like huh, you're kidding me??? he was dead serious.

The other part is my sister is a professor at a fairly reputable university, and she says, the kids graduating and entering college cannot think for themselves and struggle to write a coherent English sentence. They actually expect her to give them the answers so they can just go home and memorize what they need to know for the tests.

My own daughter went from 6th grade to a senior in high school with straight As and never studied or cracked a textbook open, until the last semester of her senior year where she took economics. She actually congratulated the teacher for at least giving her a challenge. Things like how the US government works, separations of power and/or how laws are created was seen as uncommon knowledge for her to have as a junior in High School.

this is in so. cal. btw, I'm looking it as scary and almost a blessing at the same time... managers who are looking for a strong work ethic, are going to be less picky about older guys like me when we apply for a job. It just has not hit them yet, give it a few more years.

I know plenty of (what I deem as such) worthless people of all ages. Funny thing is, high schools don't have ag or shop class anymore. No more school sponsored shooting matches. Nothing of sustenance.

On top of that, how is a know-nothing set of parents going to train their children? It trickles down. Their parents know nothing, now their kids know nothing, and their kids will now know nothing.

It's one thing to be book smart but putting it into application is where most people are lacking... That and they rely on the Internet for information. Kids write reports on the Grand Canyon. They know everything that there is to know about it. How many have been there and learned the reality of it?

Technology makes people too complacent. Complacency is not a good thing...

Kids still go to school? Who the hell sends there kids to school these day!? I know, bad parents...

Meh....that is a really nice generalization and has a value of about equal to raw sewage.

Now that description covers my daughters pretty well...but is not even close to some of their friends and associates. I am stunned that some of these idiots are capable of tying their shoes...

The Millennials are pretty much a spoiled lot. Participation trophies, safe spaces and lots and lots of drama.

But you keep telling yourself that the vegan crowds are good...they will all be brain damaged beyond hope soon enough as the human brain requires animal fat proteins to heal and replace brain cells...fact.

I'm a millennial and I could care less what old people think. What the hell do I need to learn from school, there isn't even going to be an America in 10 years.

All I need to know is how to wheel and deal, con my way to the top just like my idol Hillary Clinton and f*ck every girl getting there just like my other idol Harvey Weinstein. There super old people we young folks can look up to.

RE: America is Changing, Have You Noticed?
That's not really a surprise. With the shift away from a real manufacturing economy to a service oriented economy, different industries will be affected differently.

Hopefully the tides will swing back to manufacturing and production, as a service industry can not sustain itself infinitely without imploding.

The best scenario is a moderate mix of both, similar to the American economy between 1950 and 1980s/90s.
