did you read your link? ...... sound like wonderful people ? no ? (from 1985 article)

Couldn't find anything current on the Chicago community, except a library.
I still can't figure out the spiritual uniqueness of being a Swedenborg?

They are. Although the article points out that they are active in the community, you cannot just decide to live in the enclave. As said, you have to he able to prove heritage. My friend had to be interviewed with documentation to live there. I am 3/4 Swedish, or wouldnt have been allowed to even visit here there, in her living quarters. I had to be introduced to the rest of the people that shared the house. I also was only allowed to be there certain times of the day.

They are also similar to other groups that they have to marry somebody with ties to the religion (not unlike pre-arranged marriages) and they do not marry outsiders.

Yes, anybody can study, however, you will never be fully integrated without the heritage, just like some of the other religious groups I mentioned.

No alcohol allowed, and needless to say, my friend Jayne lost her ability to stay there after we hit a few clubs on Clark St. In Chicago one night....chuckle We had 'em fooled for over a year though. chucklechuckle

What year was that?
Is the community still there and thriving?

That was the first aryicle spotted thst had a good description of the community. I realize it is old. My friend Jayne wad living there about that time, so maybe it's eased up a bit since then.

Perhaps they are expanding more simply because they need to. Not all the people raised there, stay, so in order to remain viable, who knows?

When Jayne moved in, her entire family had to be interviewed. It was supposed to be some kind of punishment for her, because we were kinda wild and bratty. chuckle She could pretty much come and go ad she pleased, but there was constant scrutiny.

The folks were nice, don't get me wrong. It however is a cult. They might be active in the community but do not really take well to outsiders.

The house my friend lived in was one of if not the largest house in the compound. Gorgeous old mansion, with two families below that both had children. The upstairs was shared with another person. It must have been servant quarters at some time. She shared and participated in meal times with the downstairs families. That's the way a lot of them live there. A very communal feel to it.

In the 80's.

I haven't been back to that part of Chicago since 2009. It was still there at that time. That is extremely prime real estate in the area, surrounded by million dollar homes. That 40 acres is pretty much priceless, and I can't see them giving it up. Its beautiful.

Thanks. It is actually not a bad thing to look into. I most certainly did when my friend lived there.

Interesting because in the 85'article there already was the problem of young people not being able to afford houses, so they built and charged them at cost, iirc, 80 thousand.
Curious if the community is dying out due to their young people leaving.

My mom also had an affinity for Findhorn...I think their living community went caput.
