Winter Camping Thread

Years ago Park rangers used to do things for you if you were a Eagle Scout.

Apple River Canyon State Park used to reopen the camp ground for us so we could go winter camping.

He would justify it by increased revenue.

Stockton Illinois is the nearest large town.
Kraft Cheese was in Stockton Illinois.
in WWI Kraft Cheese won the US Army cheese contract.

To camp in winter you have to rent a heater, a construction tent, army cot.
You have to visit a farmer and buy bales of hay.
The heat creates a lot of mud.
The hay absorbs it.

RE: Apple River Canyon State Park
Here is the Montana tent or Cowboy tent.
They cost a lot of money.
I have never camped this way.

RE: Winter Camping Thread
A mistake he has made.
You should shovel out your campsite.
Then put hay in your tent area.
His method is cold and muddy.

RE: Winter Camping Thread
I slept out in a Canvas tent once in the Yorkshire Dales, -10'c weather with snow outside and it was the coldest night I remember spending outdoors. Never again. Resorted to sleeping out in the car instead as the metal insulates the warmth, but hindsight makes me wonder why I didn't just bring the double-insulated tent and slept off the floor with a few roll-mats instead.
