A city that's home to 4 million people is about to run dry

Based on current projections, "Day Zero" is forecast for April 12, according to officials. That would make Cape Town the world's first major city to run dry.

The prospect that large sections of South Africa's showcase city, which features a seafront and is famously perched not far from where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, might have to cope without running water has induced anxiety as well as resolve among Cape Town's nearly 4 million residents.

Hanoi enjoyed just 38 days of clean air in 2017.

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the country's second largest city by population. The population in 2015 was estimated at 7.7 million people.

Taps run dry in crisis cities

The reservoir supplying Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city and a metropolitan region of 20 million people, nearly dried up in 2015, as the country faced its worst drought in 80 years, depriving many residents of water for 12 hours a day.

Originally planned to support about 1 million people, the Afghan capital is now home to more than 4.6 million, according to U.S. government estimates.

Several unseasonably dry winters, along with the sprawling population, have strained supplies. Those who can afford to, have dug unregulated wells to tap a falling water table.

Melting Arctic Permafrost Could Release Tons of Toxic Mercury

Scientists have uncovered another hidden threat buried in the icy frozen north—massive natural reserves of mercury, a toxic heavy metal that in some forms can build up in fish and other animals and cause serious health problems in humans.

A study published Monday in the journal Geophysical Research Letters reports that the amount of natural mercury bound up in Arctic permafrost may be 10 times greater than all the mercury humans have pumped into the atmosphere from coal-burning and other pollution sources over the last 30 years. As climate change warms the land, this thawing permafrost could release significant quantities of mercury back into the environment, potentially allowing far more of the pollutant to build up in the atmosphere and the food web.

Scariest sentences I've read today: “The Arctic is going through the most unprecedented transition in human history. This year’s observations confirm that the Arctic shows no signs of returning to the reliably frozen state it was in just a decade ago.”

We’re witnessing the fastest decline in Arctic sea ice in at least 1,500 years

It’s not yet clear how 2018 will fare, but it doesn’t look good: On February 6, the National Snow & Ice Data Center reported that Arctic sea-ice extent for the month of January was at a record low.

“There is just 6.2 million square miles of sea ice on the planet right now, about a million square miles less than typical this time of year during the 1990s,” Holthaus writes at Grist.

No Christmas 2018 *

There I said it, ... Scream1

Maybe this can be the post that gets me banned first on the new ban list!

* I would like to state for the record that this post in no way should be construed as any kind of "attack" being waged on the "liberal" "War On Christmas".

It is just a statement of concern about Christmas 2018. chuckle

Arctic temperatures are soaring, and scientists are freaking out

The planet keeps heating up and melting ice at a "frightening" pace.

It was the warmest December on record in the Arctic, and 2018 has already set a string of records for lowest Arctic sea ice.

Professor of thermal sciences John Abraham told ThinkProgress via email. “The temperatures in the Arctic are off the chart. This matters for the rest of us because this is the time of year when the Arctic ice should be growing. But it isn’t growing like it should. So, this summer, there will be less ice and more open waters that will lead to more warming.”

60% of the world's saiga antelope population died in one week in 2015 after high temperatures & humidity in Kazakhstan made them vulnerable to bacteria. These mass mortality events are becoming more common

The terrifying phenomenon that is pushing species towards extinction

Scientists are alarmed by a rise in mass mortality events – when species die in their thousands.

The scientists on the ground pinpointed blood poisoning as the cause, but were puzzled as to why whole herds were dying so quickly. After 32 postmortems, they concluded the culprit was the bacterium Pasteurella multocida, which they believe normally lives harmlessly in the tonsils of some, if not all, of the antelopes. In a research paper published in January in Science Advances, Kock and colleagues contrasted the 2015 MME with the two from the 1980s. They concluded that a rise in temperature to 37C and an increase in humidity above 80% in the previous few days had stimulated the bacteria to pass into the bloodstream where it caused haemorrhagic septicaemia, or blood poisoning.

Icy air reveals human-made methane levels higher than previously believed

In a new paper published in Nature, the researchers report two important findings regarding methane, a powerful greenhouse gas and large contributor to global warming:

First, the risk that warming will trigger methane release from large natural reservoirs of ancient carbon seems to be low.

Second, humans are probably contributing more methane to the atmosphere through fossil fuel use and extraction than scientists previously believed.

Reducing methane emissions from fossil fuels may therefore be an even more important factor in reducing global warming.
