F-18 jet and tanker crash in mid-air during refuelling near Japan

Japanese search and rescue planes were immediately dispatched

Two US Marine jets have collided off the coast of Japan during refuelling, and search and rescue efforts are underway.

The crash was announced by the United States Marine Corps, which indicated that Japanese search and rescue jets responded immediately to the incident.

The incident involved an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet made by McDonnell Douglass, and a KC-130, a refuelling plane with propellers made by Lockheed Martin.

"Search and rescue operations continue for US Marine aircraft that were involved in a mishap off of the coast of Japan around 2.00 am Dec 6," a Marine Corps news release said.

I wouldn't hold up much hope that they will find any alive. So sad, but it is in the nature of their jobs, and they all knew what could happen.

RIP to all that perished.

2 U.S. Marine planes hit each other in Japan? This is a strange story. How did they manage to do that? Was one of them hijacked? Did someone interfere with their radar? Or is this just par for course in the U.S. military?

often more troops are lost simply from moving from one location to another rather than lost due to anything that involves hostility, accidents have always been a problem

I am surprised that such highly trained individuals have so many accidents. It seems like they would have more skill than say, a commercial airline pilot.
