Russian Duma adopts bill making the study of national minority languages voluntary. While it might not sound like much, this policy essentially guarantees the further marginalization of non-Russian languages.

Siberia Activists Urge Government To Keep Mandatory Yakut Lessons
RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty-7 Jun 2018

Russia's 'Ethnic' Republics See Language Bill As Existential Threat

The bill would prevent regions from requiring the study of and teaching in minority languages and making such study voluntary at the request of parents. At the same time, the study of Russian language and culture would be part of the required curriculum. Many in the ethnic republics fear the change would mean fewer opportunities for minority-language speakers and would represent a major intrusion by the federal government into an area previously delegated to the regions.

Moldovans protest after court voids mayoral election result

Moldovans are staging daily protests in the capital Chisinau to demand the reversal of a court ruling invalidating the election of a pro-European candidate in the city’s mayoral race.

The June 19 ruling has drawn a sharp rebuke from the United States and the European Union.

Nastase, a former prosecutor, won 52.5 percent of the votes, defeating pro-Russian candidate Ion Ceban.

Putin's Accession to Presidency

The decision to pick Vladimir Putin as the successor to former Russian President Boris Yeltsin was made by three people in the ex-leader's immediate entourage and family.

The trio at the helm of “operation 'successor'” were Yeltsin's daughter Tatyana Dyachenko, her husband Valentin Yumashev and banker Sergei Pugachyov himself.
