I love dogs, even pit bulls. It's people who I have trouble with.
My son was walking his (oops, I mean his girlfriend's) dog in a dog park. A pit bull ran up and got the little Maltese in his jaws -- and while my son was prying its teeth off the much smaller dog, the pit bull's mutt friend bit my son on his side. The owner stood back while all this was going on and finally ran off with his screaming girlfriend. My son refused medical treatment for himself but took the Maltese to the vet. Again. Yes, it happened before. The last time was because a coyote in City Park attacked the poor little pooch. He's OK. If a woman had been walking the dog either time, I expect it would have died.
Here's the maddening thing. The victim was on a leash. The pit bull and his buddy were not.

No more walks in the park. Because you can't trust dog owners.

Your easiest and best protection is pepper spray. It doesn't always work on a determined pit, but in most cases it stops the trouble in short order.

I used it to put off two boxers who were mauling a goat, blood everywhere! The goat lived!

If the spray doesn't do it, pick up the pit by the back legs and swing it into a tree or hard on the ground. It is hard for the dog to come around to get you if you swing it. Go for the kill.
