Winter storms hit Europe with avalanche threat over the Alps

Austria has issued its highest warning for avalanches while food had to be trucked into an Alpine village in Bavaria for residents stuck in their homes. At least 14 people have died, and more snow is forecast.

Ok, another earthly paradise, or at least Land of the Reasonable, being overrun. And all at the same time. I met an Austrian a few months ago who humbly bragged about the magnificient conditions in his neck of the woods as he was leaving Nopaltitlan, and now look at us both.

A most sad star adorns the night's abyss!
An ill horn sounds in the Noble House!
The dead do not understand; hear, you living.

RE: [.de] Wetterchaos in Deutschland und Österreich
The polar vortex is about to split into 3 pieces, bringing severe winter weather and blizzard conditions for parts of the U.S. and Europe… And the snow chaos has already begun!

Scientists are seeing signs that global weather patterns toward the latter half of January and into February may shift significantly to usher in severe winter weather for parts of the U.S. and Europe, which is currently still under the effects of a strong north Atlantic ridge and an Arctic outbreak across the Balkan peninsula and Mediterranean. Yes, I think severe winter has already begun. Now let’s wait until the polar vortex suddenly splits. It will be terrifying!

That's very poetic, and witty at the same time.

Goethe could have written that. Or maybe Heinrich Heine, with his pensive musing moods....

[.de] Schneechaos: Notstand in Bayern und Österreich

Fresh avalanche threats end brief respite for the Alps

Parts of Austria and Germany have received new avalanche warnings as heavy snowfall looks set to return. In Bavaria in southern Germany, thousands were working to clear snow from rooftops at risk of collapsing.

Avalanche risk monitors announced new warnings for Austria on Saturday after strong winds brought snowfall back to parts of the country overnight.

Fresh snowfall on Saturday and forecast to continue into Sunday, brought an end to a brief pause on Friday.

Heavy snow has brought parts of Europe to a standstill in the past few days, cutting off mountain villages, disrupting transport and triggering avalanches.

At least 21 weather-related deaths have been reported across the continent in the last 10 days.

Austrian army rescues German students stranded at ski resort

The 66 pupils and their teachers have been snowed in for days on the Kasberg mountain. They had to be airlifted amount amidst record-breaking and deadly snowstorms.

Some 66 German school pupils and their teachers had to be airlifted out of a ski resort by the Austrian army on Friday evening, local media reported. The group became stranded when the enormous snowstorms hitting the Alps in recent days left them completely cut off on the Kasberg mountain near the town of Grünau im Almtal in Upper Austria.

Army helicopters were able to airlift the students out of the hotel. The group arrived last Saturday, but the resort was forced to cease operations shortly thereafter due to the fear of avalanches, falling trees, and possible power cuts prompted by the heavy snow pummeling parts of western and central Austria.

About 500 soldiers have been called up to clear roads that have become impassable and a further 1,000 are on standby, Vienna said.
