Hedge Fund Tycoon Robert Mercer’s Sheriff’s Badge Has Been Revoked
As Bloomberg Businessweek reported last month, Mercer gave up his New Mexico badge for undisclosed reasons in September. The mayor of Lake Arthur shut the volunteer program last week.

But the 71-year-old financier is still in the law-enforcement game. Last week, a lawyer for the office of Sheriff Chad Day of Yuma County, Colorado, confirmed that Mercer is a volunteer member of the agency.

“From time to time, he serves in certain roles as designated by the sheriff,”
Quote:Undercover Operations

Mercer, whose financial backing of Steve Bannon, Breitbart News and the political-data firm Cambridge Analytica helped put Trump in the White House, lives in a mansion on Long Island, New York. He stepped down as co-chief executive officer of the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies LLC late last year and remains a researcher at the firm.

A Colorado gun-rights activist named Dudley Brown introduced Sheriff Day to Mercer’s foundation, according to the minutes of a February 2016 Yuma County Board of Commissioners meeting. Brown is the executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, which positions itself as a “no-compromise” alternative to the National Rifle Association. He declined to comment.

Sheriff Day rejected a Bloomberg News request this month under Colorado’s public-records law for documents relating to Mercer and his associates, including information on their qualifications and duties. He said disclosing the names of volunteers could endanger their safety.

According to the Paradise Papers, billionaire Robert Mercer achieved his political objectives while making very nice tax savings

Paradise Papers: James Simons and the $US15 billion trust

In December 2010, an attorney associated with James Simons, the billionaire founder of the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies, submitted a secret application to Bermuda's highest court.

He was seeking approval for a set of changes to a trust fund Simons had quietly aintained on the island since 1974.

Getting approval for the changes – which included adding his charitable foundation as a beneficiary of the trust's fortune – required Simons to give the court, under seal, data relating to his overall wealth. But Simons' legal team insisted that such filings must be limited.

The "exact quantum" of Simons' wealth was a strictly private matter, trust lawyer John Robert Balfour Richmond argued. The billionaire had no taste for discussion of his fortune.

"A Google search against Mr Simons' name will throw up any number of estimations of his or his family's wealth," Richmond wrote in a secret affidavit filed with the 2010 request. "Wikipedia, citing Forbes, for example, states his wealth as being $US8.5 billion."

If Richmond sounded dismissive of Forbes' estimate, one reason may have been simple: The magazine hadn't captured the full extent of Simons' wealth.

Richmond knew what Forbes apparently didn't: in addition to his billions of dollars in US assets, Simons had amassed $US7.25 billion in a low-profile Bermudan trust that is one of the largest private trust funds ever discovered.

A confidential accounting document attached to the 2010 filing projects the offshore fortune growing to $US15 billion by the end of this year and reaching $US35 billion by 2030.

The revelation of the massive offshore holding changes the public understanding of Simons' wealth, offering a case study of how little we know about the fortunes of the planet's richest people.

RE: Trump refused to reveal the NRA’s influence over the White House.
Documents Appear to Show That The NRA & Donald Trump Violated Campaign Coordination Law

Documents unearthed by Mother Jones point to illegal campaign coordination between President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association. The documents come from the 2016 election and show that Trump and the NRA used the same consultants during ad blitzes leading up to the election.

According to Mother Jones, the NRA and Trump’s campaign both purchased ad blitzes targeting the same demographic in Norfolk, Virginia the week before the election. While it appears at first that they used different media strategy firms, that might not actually be the case.

The NRA used a firm called Red Eagle Media, while the Trump campaign used the American Media & Advocacy Group. Both are closely connected to conservative media-consulting firm National Media Research, Planning and Placement.

In fact, The Trace points out that both groups’ ad buys were authorized by the same person. That person was National Media’s chief financial officer, Jon Ferrell.

Larry Noble, a former general counsel for the FEC, pointed out to Mother Jones that “this is very strong evidence, if not proof, of illegal coordination.” Noble added, “This is the heat of the general election, and the same person is acting as an agent for the NRA and the Trump campaign.”

It appears this ad blitz wasn’t the only time the two groups appear to coordinate their messages. National Media, through Red Eagle and AMAG, completed ad buys for both groups that appeared to coordinate and/or enhance each other.

The potential coordination would violate election laws. While the NRA could spend as much money as it wanted on behalf of Trump in 2016, an independent group and a campaign are not allowed to share election-related information. If they coordinate, then the group’s expenditures don’t qualify as independent.

Maria Butina's lawyers just filed paperwork to change her plea from not guilty to guilty. Remains to be seen if she's cooperating or not, but it's a major win for prosecutors to bag the NRA's Russian princess.

A major development in the federal investigation into the National Rifle Association’s 2016 political activities just unfolded when an accused Russian spy just filed a motion in federal court to hold a hearing this week so she can change her plea to guilty of charges that she infiltrated the NRA to influence America’s 2016 presidential election.

Maria Butina’s boyfriend claimed he set up Trump-Russia NRA “conduit” as campaign funds flowed
Republican operative Paul Erickson claimed in an email he’d set up a private Russia-GOP channel through the NRA

Quote:According to prosecutors, Erickson “worked with Butina to arrange introductions to U.S. persons having influence in American politics,” including the NRA and the organizers of the National Prayer Breakfast.

In 2015, Butina organized a trip for former NRA presidents and officials to Moscow, where she arranged a meeting for them with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“We should let them express their gratitude now, we will put pressure on them quietly later,” she wrote to Torshin after the meeting.

Around the same time, Erickson appears to have known about Butina’s work and was helping her establish connections.

“Unrelated to specific presidential campaigns,” Erickson wrote in October 2016, in an email to an acquaintance now in possession of the FBI, “I’ve been involved in securing a VERY private line of communication between the Kremlin and key [unnamed political party] leaders through, of all conduits, the [unnamed gun-rights organization].”

FBI investigators raided Erickson's South Dakota home and found a note in which he mused, “How to respond to FSB offer of employment?” The FSB is Russia’s intelligence agency and the successor to the infamous KGB.

Butina continued to attend “friendship dinners” with prominent conservatives and later arranged for a group of Russians to attend the National Prayer Breakfast in February of 2017.

In an email to Erickson, Butina wrote that the Russians were coming to the breakfast “to establish a back channel of communication,” The Daily Beast reported.

Erickson sent the list of Russian attendees to another person and wrote, “Reaction to the delegation’s presence in America will be conveyed DIRECTLY” to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Lavrov.

As these efforts were ongoing, the NRA was breaking spending records with sums of cash never before seen from the group.

The NRA, relying on an arm of the group that is not required to disclose its donors, spent more than $30 million to elect President Donald Trump, nearly triple the $12.5 million they spent to help Republican nominee Mitt Romney in 2012. They spent $54 million in total to elect Republicans in 2016.

Since the 2016 election, the NRA has cut its spending drastically. During the 2018 midterm cycle, McClatchy reported that the NRA had spent just $1.6 million to help Republicans, about 10 percent of the $16 million the group had spent backing GOP candidates in the 2014 midterms.

But the NRA didn’t just spend a lot of money to help Trump win. Watchdog groups filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission accusing the NRA and the Trump campaign of illegally coordinating ads to influence the 2016 election. According to The Trace, both the NRA and Trump campaign illegally coordinated to the point where their ad buys were authorized by the same person at the National Media Research firm.

RE: Trump refused to reveal the NRA’s influence over the White House.
The National Rifle Association is so close to Russia that they sent an official delegation of their top members to meet with Putin’s top ranking government ministers and military gun manufacturers.

This week, the NRA’s top death merchant, CEO Wayne LaPierre, along with the organization’s outside counsel, both shamelessly lied to The New York Times in a clumsy effort to distance the gun rights sales organization’s ties to Russia.

Afterward, a tipster leaked the NRA’s receipts, which completely disproves their feeble attempt to distance the single organization most responsible for an upswing in American mass murders from Putin, who in turn attacked America’s 2016 election to help their mutually favored candidate: Trump. ABC News reports:

Quote:“In one email, an NRA employee appears to help Butina make travel arrangements for a delegation that included former NRA president David Keene, future NRA president Pete Brownell, NRA fundraiser Joe Gregory, NRA benefactor Dr. Arnold Goldschlager and his daughter Hilary, Outdoor Channel CEO Jim Liberatore, and prominent NRA advocate and Trump campaign surrogate David Clarke, then the sheriff of Milwaukee County.”
